Economic Buyer

The economic buyer is the person who can approve the spend without asking anyone else. That is a narrower group than the people who can stop the deal, and usually a different person from the one running the evaluation. A deal is forecast on a name; it closes on a relationship with that name.

How it actually gets missed

The economic buyer is almost always named early and then never spoken to. Someone mentions who signs, the conversation moves on, and the deal carries that name in the CRM for four months without anyone testing whether the person knows the deal exists.

No confirmed economic buyer — this is what gates the forecast.

How deep, not how many

Economic Buyer has three rungs, and where a deal sits on them is the difference between a dimension you have answered and one you have qualified. These are the rungs SalesWolf actually scores — the same ladder the product reads, not a scale invented for this page.

named
You have a name and a title. This is where most forecast deals sit, and on its own it tells you nothing about whether the deal will close.
motivated
You can state the outcome this buyer is personally measured on — theirs, not your champion’s.
engaged
They have spent time on this deal directly: a meeting, a document they asked for, a question they sent back. Engagement is evidence, not a feeling.

What to ask

  1. “When your team approved something this size last time, what did the approver actually see — a business case, a one-pager, someone in a room?”

Tells you the artifact this deal has to produce, and whether you are writing it this week.

  2. “What is the thing they are most likely to say no to?”

Names the objection before it is raised somewhere you cannot answer it.

  3. “Would it help if I put the numbers in front of them directly, or would you rather take it?”

Tests access without asking for it — and a refusal is itself information about your champion.
