# Economic Buyer: who signs, and whether they know the deal exists

No confirmed economic buyer — this is what gates the forecast.

Updated 10 Oct 2026

## What is an economic buyer in MEDDPICC?

The economic buyer is the person who can approve the spend without asking anyone else. That is a narrower group than the people who can stop the deal, and usually a different person from the one running the evaluation. A deal is forecast on a name; it closes on a relationship with that name.

## How do I get to the economic buyer when my contact won’t introduce me?

Stop asking for the introduction. Give your contact a reason the buyer would want the meeting: a check against the buyer’s own priorities before it reaches them for signature. If your contact still won’t carry that, you have learned something about your champion, not just about access.

## Economic buyer vs decision maker vs champion: who’s who?

The economic buyer can approve the spend without asking anyone else, and a deal has one. A champion works inside the buyer’s company and makes your case when you aren’t in the room; you want more than one. “Decision maker” isn’t a MEDDPICC term: people use it for the economic buyer, for whoever runs the evaluation, or for a committee, so ask which they mean before you write a name down.

“Buyer” is the economic buyer and “decider” the decision maker. Two of the three are MEDDPICC letters, and only the buyer can sign alone.

| Where they differ | Buyer | Decider | Champion |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Who they are | Can approve the spend alone. | Depends who’s saying it. | An insider who sells for you. |
| How many a deal has | One. | Often a committee. | One or more, and each needs testing. |
| What they can do | Say yes when others say no. | Pick the vendor; may not sign. | Make your case when you’re not there. |
| How you know | Deals this size went through them before. | Ask what they mean by it. | They did what they said, by the date. |
| What missing it costs | A yes overturned above your contact. | A close date resting on the wrong name. | Nobody arguing for you inside. |

### The test: what happens if they say yes and everyone else says no?

When someone names the decision maker, ask what happens if that person says yes and the rest of the room says no. If the deal still goes ahead, you have the economic buyer. If it waits, you have an evaluator, and the next question is who they’re waiting on.

- “If [name] said yes and everyone else said no, would it still go ahead?”
- “Is the person who picks the vendor the same one who approves the spend?”
- “Who on your side wants this fixed badly enough to argue for it?”

One person can wear two of these. The VP running the evaluation is sometimes the economic buyer as well, and sometimes your champion. Test each role on its own: a meeting with them proves you have access, not that they’ll sell for you.

SalesWolf holds one economic buyer per deal. Give the role to someone else and it moves to them, and what you recorded on the previous one, such as whether you’ve met them, is deleted. Champions have no limit. There is no decision-maker role: the roles are champion, economic buyer, coach and blocker. SalesWolf proposes the economic buyer and the champions from your calls, and you accept each one. An economic buyer reaches named, motivated or engaged; a champion reaches candidate, motivated, influential or tested.

- The [MEDDPICC Scorecard](https://www.saleswolf.com/artifacts/meddpicc-scorecard) gives each its own section: “E — who signs, and have you met them” and “C — your champions, one by one”.
- The [Champion questions](https://www.saleswolf.com/meddpicc/champion) find out whether yours will carry the deal to the person who signs.
- The [Champion Plan](https://www.saleswolf.com/artifacts/champion-plan) puts every champion on one page, with the next test for each.

## How it actually gets missed

The economic buyer is almost always named early and then never spoken to. Someone mentions who signs, the conversation moves on, and the deal carries that name in the CRM for four months without anyone testing whether the person knows the deal exists.

How deep, not how many

## Economic Buyer questions, from named to engaged

Economic Buyer has three rungs, and where a deal sits on them is the difference between a dimension you have answered and one you have qualified. These are the rungs SalesWolf marks on the deal, by the same names and in the same order. What is written under each is the standard to hold a deal to. The product can only mark what is on record, so check its rung against this bar before you rely on it.

1. ### named

You have a name and a title. A name is enough to put a deal in the forecast, and on its own it tells you nothing about whether it will close.

  1. “When something this size gets approved here, whose signature is the last one on it?”

Asks for the approver by the approval rather than by title, so you do not name the evaluator by mistake.
    2. “When your team approved something this size last time, what did the approver actually see — a business case, a one-pager, someone in a room?”

Tells you the artifact this deal has to produce, and whether you are writing it this week.
2. ### motivated

You can state the outcome this buyer is personally measured on — theirs, not your champion’s.

  1. “What is [name] on the hook for this year — the number they get asked about?”

Gets the buyer’s personal measure, which is rarely the champion’s.
    2. “What is the thing they are most likely to say no to?”

Names the objection before it is raised somewhere you cannot answer it.
3. ### engaged

They have spent time on this deal directly: a meeting, a document they asked for, a question they sent back. Engagement is evidence, not a feeling.

  1. “Would it help if I put the numbers in front of them directly, or would you rather take it?”

Tests access without asking for it — and a refusal is itself information about your champion.
    2. “Before this reaches [name] for signature, would they want fifteen minutes to check it against their priorities for the year?”

Gives your champion a reason to bring you in that serves the buyer, not you.
