Not an MEDDPICC letter · Why Now
Compelling Event
A compelling event is the dated thing that makes doing nothing more expensive than deciding. MEDDPICC does not have a letter for it and SalesWolf works it anyway, because the absence of one is the single most common reason a well-qualified deal slips a quarter. An event that has been stated is a topic; an event with a date and a stated consequence is a deadline.
Compelling Event is not one of MEDDPICC’s eight letters. SalesWolf works it anyway, and says so here rather than quietly presenting it as part of somebody else’s methodology.
How it actually gets missed
A renewal date or a contract expiry gets recorded as the compelling event and treated as settled. Nobody asks what actually happens if it passes — and very often the honest answer is “nothing much”, which means it was never compelling and the deal has no deadline at all.
No dated event means no deadline pressure — the deal can slip indefinitely.
How deep, not how many
Compelling Event has three rungs, and where a deal sits on them is the difference between a dimension you have answered and one you have qualified. These are the rungs SalesWolf actually scores — the same ladder the product reads, not a scale invented for this page.
- stated
- Someone has named a reason this has to happen in a particular window — a renewal, a migration, an audit, a launch.
- dated
- There is a specific date on it, and it is one the customer holds rather than one you proposed.
- consequenced
- You know what it costs them if the date passes, and so do they. Without this rung the date is a preference, and preferences move.
Done when · You can name the dated event the customer is working back from.
What to ask
“What is driving the timing on this — why this quarter rather than next?”
Finds whether a real event exists, or whether the date is your forecast wearing a disguise.
“What happens on your side if that date passes?”
Tests whether the event has a consequence, which is what separates a deadline from a wish.
“Who else is affected if it slips?”
Finds the people whose deadline this also is — often the fastest route to an economic buyer.
